5320: COVA Reflection and Application

I first realized I had genuine choice, ownership, and voice during my time in the Applied Digital Learning (ADL) program at Lamar University, particularly while working on my Innovation Plan . This assignment allowed me to tailor a project to my interests in game design and educational psychology, showcasing my unique approach.

Initially, when given the responsibility to take ownership over my learning with an authentic project , I felt a mix of excitement and trepidation. The freedom was empowering but also intimidating. I wasn't fully ready, so I began by thoroughly researching growth mindset and neuroplasticity, as outlined in my blog. This foundation helped me gain confidence and take ownership of my learning.

To adjust, I embraced iterative learning, constantly refining my work based on feedback. I utilized resources available on my website, such as the Learning Manifesto, to stay aligned with my goals. In hindsight, I would have collaborated more with peers early on to enhance my project through more diverse perspectives.

Focusing on my own organization (HEBISD)  was challenging initially, as it required a shift from traditional academic course  to a more personalized approach. By focusing on my organization’s needs, as seen in my Innovation Proposal, I was able to align my voice with practical outcomes, making my work more relevant and impactful.

My attitude evolved significantly about leading change in my organization. Initially hesitant, I learned to leverage small wins to build  momentum for larger changes. The 4DX Influencer Implementation I documented was instrumental in this shift, showing me that structured approaches can effectively drive organizational change.

My innovation plan is truly authentic. It was developed with a sincere intention to transform our learning environment. The detailed steps and practical applications outlined in my Implementation Outline reflect my commitment to making a meaningful impact.

The COVA approach and CSLE align perfectly with my learning philosophy, which emphasizes student engagement and real-world application. The principles outlined in my Learning Philosophy on my website underscore the importance of active, student-centered learning.

My perspective has shifted from viewing learning as a linear process to understanding it as dynamic and student-driven. The iterative nature of the ADL program, highlighted in various assignments, has reinforced the value of continuous improvement and adaptability in education.

I plan to implement the COVA approach by incorporating project-based learning and providing students with opportunities to choose topics that resonate with their interests. This strategy is inspired by the successful outcomes I’ve documented in my course projects and blog posts.

I will continue to design assignments that allow students to select their own topics, methods, and presentation formats, much like the flexible projects I completed in this program. This approach will empower them to take ownership and express their unique perspectives.

Ensuring consistent assessment across diverse projects all these diverse projects will be a challenge, but the strategies outlined in my Influencer Strategy can help me mitigate these challenges.

I feel like I am still in the process of fully adopting a Learner's Mindset. This ongoing journey involves reflecting on and improving my teaching practices, as documented on my ePortfolio website I have been creating throughout my time in the Applied Digital Learning Program @Lamar University.

As a passionate game design teacher leading a gamified blended learning initiative, I can leverage the COVA (Choice, Ownership, Voice, and Authentic learning) approach to create a dynamic and engaging educational experience. Here’s how:

"Knowing What You Know Now About the COVA Approach, How Will You Plan to Use the COVA Approach to Create Significant Learning Environments in Your Organization?"

I will integrate the COVA approach by embedding choices and authentic tasks within the curriculum. For instance, students will be given the option to select from various game design projects that cater to their interests, such as developing games that teach concepts of growth mindset and neuroplasticity. This aligns with my Innovation Plan, where students can explore and create personalized projects.

How Will You Give Your Learners Choice, Ownership, and Voice Through Authentic Assignments?

To give learners choice, ownership, and voice, I will design open-ended assignments that allow students to choose their project topics, methods, and presentation styles. For example, in the  Learning Philosophy assignment, I emphasize the importance of allowing students to explore their interests within the framework of game design. Students can create educational games that demonstrate their understanding of neuroplasticity, reflecting their personal insights and creativity.

How Will You Prepare Your Learners and Colleagues for the COVA Approach and CSLE?

Preparing learners and colleagues for the COVA approach and Creating Significant Learning Environments (CSLE) involves several steps:

  1. Professional Development: I will finish building out my online course and conduct training sessions to familiarize educators with the principles and benefits of the COVA approach and CSLE..

  2. Collaborative Learning Communities: Establishing a strong collaborative community is crucial. As highlighted in the Self-Differentiated Leadership and Bringing the Organization Change Process Together post, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment helps both learners and educators to share their experiences and grow together.

  3. Mentoring and Support: Continuous mentoring and feedback are essential. By creating a space where students and colleagues can openly discuss their projects and receive constructive feedback, we can ensure continuous improvement and engagement.

What Are Some Challenges That You Will Face in Using the COVA Approach and CSLE?

Implementing the COVA approach and CSLE comes with its challenges:

  1. Resistance to Change: Some educators and students may be resistant to adopting new teaching and learning methods. Overcoming this requires clear communication of the benefits, as well as patience and ongoing support. My Influencer Strategy provides strategies for advocating and gaining support for new initiatives.

  2. Resource Allocation: Securing the necessary resources in terms of time, technology, and funding can be challenging. My Implementation Plan Outline outlines steps to ensure resources are effectively utilized.

  3. Consistency and Assessment: Maintaining consistency in the application of the COVA approach and ensuring meaningful assessment across diverse projects can be difficult. Developing clear rubrics and assessment criteria, as discussed in the Aligning Outcomes, Assessment, and Activities section, will help address this challenge.

By strategically addressing these challenges and leveraging the resources and strategies I have published on my website,  I believe I can create a learning environment that supports personal growth, and encourages a lifelong love of learning.
