Learning Manifesto: Unlocking Potential Through Play

As a game design teacher at a public high school, I am passionate about harnessing the power of play to engage students in deep learning. Games provide interactive environments where students can experiment, take risks, and develop the persistence required for mastery. My goal is to create immersive learning experiences that equip students with 21st century skills like critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication.

I started my teaching career in 2010 and have since taught thousands of students, designed courses across all levels, and even stepped in to revive struggling classes. Over the past 15 years, I have learned so much from my students while also honing my approach to teaching.

While games have traditionally been viewed as entertainment, I see their vast potential as pedagogical tools. Though some educators dismiss games as distractions, I will continue proving how play cultivates the mindset and skills essential for my students' success, both inside and outside the classroom. Game elements can increase engagement and promote active learning if incorporated thoughtfully into coursework. I aim to integrate game mechanics in a way that aligns with desired learning outcomes. Points and rewards alone will not deepen learning. Narrative context makes earning achievements purposeful. Cooperation balances healthy competition to prevent demotivation.

My vision is to create blended courses where gameplay complements traditional methods. Students will alternate between completing interactive quests and reflective discussions, engaging diverse learning styles. I measure success not by test scores but by displays of critical thinking, communication skills, and creative confidence.

I believe each student has untapped potential waiting to be unlocked. Games allow students to step into heroic roles, take agency over their learning journey, and grow through epic adventures. My role as an educator is to craft experiences that bring out the best in students while guiding them to believe in themselves.

Over my career, I have pioneered gaming initiatives that reimagine education. My proudest moments are when struggling students overcome obstacles through gameplay. Games provide achievable challenges and low-stakes practice. I have witnessed many students build confidence and skills through this process.

While learners have unique needs, motivations, and preferences, play-based learning can empower them all to level up.

My passion is creating games that help students unlock their potential. And I recognize that as an educator, I must continue leveling up as well. I am committed to lifelong learning, constantly reading, reflecting, and innovating to improve my teaching craft. My learning journey involves connecting with fellow passionate educators, experimenting with new techniques, and soliciting frequent feedback from students to sharpen my approach.

I became an educator because I believe in every student's inner hero. Games let students step into heroic roles, take agency over their learning, and experience epic adventures that lead to growth. My goal is to keep designing playful learning experiences that bring out the best in my students. And I will keep learning and improving as an educator to better empower the heroes of tomorrow.,
