Gamifying Cross-Disciplinary Learning Course Plan
Please review the following information about the plan for executing my blended learning course that gamifies concepts from biology, English, and game design. This is a public LMS course so feel free to participate in the course and make any suggestions for improvement.
Introduction Module:
The initial module will provide an overview and introduction to the course:
- A welcome video where I introduce myself and give an overview of the gamified cross-disciplinary project
- The course syllabus outlining learning goals, policies, and how the biology, English, and game design disciplines are integrated
- A detailed course calendar with dates, deadlines, and milestones
- Instructions for navigating the Canvas LMS and accessing materials
- An icebreaker discussion forum for students to introduce themselves and build community
Core Learning Modules:
Module 1: Fundamentals of Game Design
- Video lessons covering game design principles like mechanics, level design, user experience
- Interactive exercises and hands-on tasks for practicing with game design tools
- Discussion forums for sharing work, getting feedback, and collaboration
Module 2: Neuroplasticity & Growth Mindset
- Exploring neuroplasticity and growth mindset concepts from biology/psychology
- Applying these themes to create engaging educational narratives for games
- Group projects focused on designing complete game concepts aligned with these themes
- Peer review activities for giving/receiving feedback on narrative design
Throughout the modules, a variety of multimedia resources will be utilized:
- Instructional videos demonstrating techniques
- Interactive simulations and learning exercises
- Real examples of successful educational games
- Podcasts/interviews with industry professionals
To balance scope and avoid overwhelming students:
- Complex topics broken into smaller, focused segments
- Clear guidelines and instructions provided for all assignments
- An emphasis on encouraging questions for clarification
- Varying teaching methods and activities to maintain engagement
Hands-On Application:
- Practical game development projects simulating real-world scenarios
- Collaborative group projects building teamwork and communication
- Access to industry game development tools and software
My Role: As the instructor, I will facilitate the learning experience:
- Developing and organizing the curriculum and course materials
- Leading discussions and providing prompts for engagement
- Offering regular feedback on assignments and projects
- Availability for one-on-one consultations via email, video calls, or in-person
Building the Learning Community:
- Welcoming students personally in video format
- Encouraging active participation in discussions and group work
- Providing platforms for presenting/reviewing student projects
- Regular live video sessions for real-time interaction
Balance of Asynchronous & Synchronous:
- 80% of the coursework will be self-paced individual/group asynchronous work
- 20% will be synchronous live components like Q&A sessions, virtual workshops, and project presentations
Student Support:
- Guidelines and tutorials for using Canvas and course tools
- Technical support/troubleshooting channels
- Coordination with IT for ensuring hardware/software requirements
- Accessibility alternatives for any connectivity/technology limitations
My goal is to create an engaging blended learning experience that develops cross-disciplinary skills through a gamified approach to biology, English, and game design concepts. The hands-on focus, combined with relevant multimedia and peer collaboration, will foster a passion for educational game development.
